SkinCortex

Mechanism

Itch-Scratch Cycle

A self-reinforcing loop where itch drives scratching, which damages the barrier and inflames skin.

Review

What it is

Itch in atopic skin is mediated by cytokines (notably IL-31), neuropeptides, and protease activity.

Scratching offers brief relief but mechanically damages the stratum corneum, releases more pro-inflammatory mediators, and amplifies the next itch episode.

Why it matters

Breaking the loop is a major theme in atopic dermatitis education and care.
